Dating back to 5th century B.C., encaustic is an ancient form of painting, using beeswax, damar resin (tree sap with natural hardening properties) and pigment. Molten encaustic medium is painted at high temperatures, fused with fire or heat between each layer. It is a dynamic medium which can be worked in a liquid or solid form by the artist. Encaustic photography enables the merging of photographic elements within the layers of wax and resin, creating a unique work with combines properties.
